WordPress: What It's Good At
WordPress is a content management system first. Its strengths are real:
- Non-technical editing: Your marketing team can update content, publish blog posts, and manage pages without a developer. The editor (Gutenberg) is not beautiful but it's functional.
- Ecosystem: Themes, plugins, and integrations for almost anything. WooCommerce for e-commerce, Yoast for SEO, Contact Form 7 for forms — the plugin library is enormous.
- Developer availability: WordPress developers are everywhere in India and rates are low. Maintenance is cheap.
- Fast to launch: A basic WordPress site with a premium theme and a few plugins can be live in days, not weeks.
WordPress: Its Real Problems
WordPress also has genuine problems that its supporters understate:
- Performance: Default WordPress is slow. A typical WordPress site with a few plugins scores 40–60 on Google PageSpeed. Getting to 80+ requires caching plugins, CDN configuration, image optimisation plugins, and database query optimisation — meaningful technical overhead.
- Security: WordPress is the most targeted CMS by hackers, by a wide margin. Plugins are a frequent attack vector. Maintaining a secure WordPress site requires regular updates, security plugins, and attention. Sites that get neglected get compromised.
- Plugin conflicts: The plugin ecosystem is a double-edged sword. Plugins conflict with each other, break on WordPress core updates, and introduce unpredictable behaviour. Every serious WordPress site accumulates technical debt from plugins over time.
- Core Web Vitals: Google's Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID/INP, CLS) are ranking signals, and WordPress sites consistently score worse than well-built Next.js sites. This matters for SEO.
Next.js: What It's Good At
Next.js is a React framework used for building web applications. When used for a business website, its strengths are:
- Performance: A well-built Next.js site scores 90–100 on PageSpeed consistently. Static generation means pages load extremely fast.
- SEO: Server-side rendering and static generation mean search engines see fully rendered HTML — better for indexing than client-side rendered alternatives. Combined with the performance advantage, Next.js sites rank well.
- Security: No plugin ecosystem means dramatically smaller attack surface. No admin dashboard exposed to the internet by default.
- Maintainability: A well-structured Next.js codebase is easier to maintain long-term than a WordPress site with ten plugins in varying states of maintenance.
- Custom functionality: Building anything beyond standard website features — custom calculators, interactive tools, complex filtering, API integrations — is dramatically simpler in Next.js than in WordPress.
Next.js: Its Real Problems
- Content editing: Non-technical users can't edit a Next.js site without a CMS layer. This requires either a headless CMS (Contentful, Sanity, Strapi) or building a custom admin — adding cost and complexity.
- Higher upfront cost: Building a Next.js site from scratch costs more than a WordPress site with a theme. Expect ₹80,000–3 lakhs for a business website vs ₹20,000–80,000 for WordPress.
- Developer dependency: Updates and changes require a developer. You can't drag-and-drop your way to a page update.
